The use of cryptology in history is extensive and can be seen throughout historical accounts of numerous events. One such example is the role it played in the socalled Zimmermann Telegram of 1917. This was a coded telegram sent by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to Mexico, proposing an alliance between Germany and Mexico should the US enter World War I on the side of Great Britain and France. The coded message proposed that if successful, Germany would help Mexico recover its lost territories from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado.

Research an incident where cryptology played a key role in the incident.

At the time, all communications were considered private due to encryption methods depicted using codebooks or other ciphers with which messages could be encrypted before being sent out via public telegraphs. To gain access to these messages required either a break into the codebook or some form of cryptanalysis – both difficult tasks at best for anyone trying to crack them open without knowledge of how they were coded in the first place.

Unfortunately for Germany, their choice was caught by British signal intelligence who managed to tap into their wireless communications and decode the Zimmermann Telegram thus exposing its contents to all around them including American officials who had been monitoring foreign affairs since 1914 when WWI began. This event then led President Wilson to ask Congress for permission to join forces with GB/France against German aggression as he believed this new revelation made his case stronger for bringing America into war efforts abroad after having been initially reluctant about doing so earlier on in his term as president (19141920).
