Charles Darwin first proposed the theory of evolution in his 1859 publication On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. According to this theory, species evolve across many generations through a process of natural selection. Darwin proposed that, over time, the bodies of interbreeding populations will become increasingly adapted for success or go extinct. Through natural selection, those individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing these traits on to their offspring. As a result, over time, the population as a whole will become better adapted to its environment (Waters, 2019). Darwin’s theory of evolution has been tested and confirmed through many scientific studies. For example, a study by Wiles et al. (2019) demonstrates how natural selection leads to adaptation in a population of fruit flies. Over the course of many generations, the scientists observed an increased resistance to a pesticide in the flies which they attributed to natural selection.
