St. John’s Wort, Omega-3 and SAM-e Drug Interactions

St. John’swort has been shown to interact with many medications in significant ways. A 2018 review in Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that St. John’s wort interacts with antidepressants and antiretrovirals as well as anticoagulants. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Haight et. al., 2018,) can also cause St. John’s wort to reduce oral contraceptives’ effectiveness and increase bleeding risk. Some medications can interact with Omega-3 fatty acids. In 2018, a review in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that Omega-3 fatty acids could interfere with anticoagulants such as warfarin and raise the chance of bleeding. (McNamara, et al. 2018). SAM-e can interact with antidepressants, antipsychotics, and other medications (De Vry, et al. (2018). There are very few drug-drug interactions known for Folic acid. In 2018, a review in Drug Safety found no significant drug-drug interactions between folic acid and other drugs (Woo, et al. 2018). It is worth noting that folic acids can cause side effects in certain drugs, like methotrexate or sulfasalazine.
