It is proteins that are responsible for catalyzing biochemical reactions. The concentration of substrate affects the enzyme’s activity. If the amount or activity of an enzyme is higher than its substrate, then the reaction’s rate increases. After that, there will be a saturation point, which means the enzyme concentration won’t increase proportionally. The enzyme molecules are saturated with substrate and have no active sites that can catalyze the reaction. (Ranjith 2020). This equation is commonly known as Michaelis-Menten equation and it is used widely to study the activity of enzymes at different substrate concentrations. (Larranaga. et. al., 2016). According to the Michaelis-Menten equation, when substrate concentrations are low, the rate at which the reaction occurs will depend on the amount of substrate present. Substrate concentrations will also affect the rate of the reaction. As such, it will decrease as substrate concentration increases. As the enzyme becomes saturated, however, the rate of reaction increases above the point at which it is no longer able to do so (Kumar and colleagues, 2018).
