Effect of OCD in comorbid bipolar disorder on suicidality

A study in the journal Psychiatry research in 2020 found that patients suffering from bipolar disorder may be more likely to commit suicide if they have a comorbid OCD. This study involved 136 patients suffering from bipolar disorder. 44 had comorbid OCD. It found that suicidality rates were significantly higher in those who have comorbid OCD as determined by the Suicidal Ideas Questionnaire-Junior. According to the study, comorbid OCD could worsen bipolar disorder’s course and lead to suicidal behaviors in these patients. These findings are consistent with prior research that has shown a connection between OCD, suicidality. These authors recommend that more research be done to understand how OCD can lead to suicidality and develop tailored interventions to help patients suffering from comorbid OCD or bipolar disorder.
