Review: The role of Argininosuccinate In Urea Cycle Metabolism

The urea-cycle is a pathway that converts nitrogen from ammonia into urea, and then eliminates it from the body. Five enzymes are involved in the cycle, along with five intermediates. AS, an amino acid-like compound, is transformed into fumarate and arginine by the enzyme argininosuccinate Lyase (ASL). After that, arginine can be converted to ornithine. Then, urea can be formed. AS is an intermediate of the urea-cycle. It is crucial for the removal of excess nitrogen from your body. The enzyme ASL is responsible for the conversion of AS into arginine. This step is considered the rate-limiting one in the cycle. Research has shown that ASL activity can be regulated by ornithine and arginine. In addition, ASL activity can increase in response to higher levels of either arginine or ornithine. (Latif and al., 2016).
