Aboriginal Health Systems: Loss in Land Culture, Impact on Aboriginal Health Systems

Loss of culture and land has had an important impact on participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in health and community services. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2018) reported that Indigenous Australians have higher rates of mortality, poor health and disability than non-Indigenous Australians. The loss of culture and land has led to economic and social disadvantage and disrupted traditional living patterns. A lot of Indigenous Australians distrust mainstream services and institutions due to loss of culture and land (AIHW 2018, 2018). These mistrusts can lead to lower levels of participation with community services or the health system, as well as lower health care utilization rates among Indigenous Australians. These issues can be addressed by prioritizing the empowerment and rebuilding of Indigenous Australians.
