Confidentiality in group therapy can pose problems. One possible concern is that members of group may share sensitive information with others (Corey, 2018,). The individual who divulged the information could be hurt or even put at risk. The facilitator may help to teach the importance of confidentiality within a group by setting clear guidelines and reinforcing them during the course. This might include reminding group members not to share information discussed in the group with anyone outside of the group and emphasizing the importance of maintaining confidentiality (Toseland & Rivasm, 2020)The age of the group members may impact how confidentiality is explained. Group members who are younger may require more detailed explanations or guidance about how to keep confidentiality. The duty to Report, or the obligation for therapists or facilitators to inform the authorities of any harm, or potential harm, to another person or entity, is also important.
