The phenomenon of groupthink occurs when people make decisions without taking into account other viewpoints and thoroughly analysing the situation. It can result in poor decision making and potentially disastrous results (Janis 2019, 2019). The groupthink theory can be used to assist organizations in understanding and resolving the issues of decision making. It explains how group decisions can lead to pitfalls, and encourages open discussion and diversity. Systems theory, however, suggests that an organization can be considered a complex system made up of interconnected components that work together in order to accomplish a common goal. (Bertalanffy (2018) Applying this theory to an organization’s decision-making processes allows us to identify and analyze the components of the decision. We can also see how changes made in one component can ripple across the entire system. These theories would be explained to my client using a mixture of group discussions, lectures and case studies.
