Effect of MIG12 defects on production of Ketone Bodies

MIG12 or mitochondrial intermediary peptidase 12 is a protein responsible for the production of ketones, which are vital to a healthy metabolism. A defect in MIG12 can significantly reduce the body’s ability to produce these ketone bodies, resulting in a variety of metabolic problems. Recent research has revealed that a defect in MIG12 proteins prevents it from binding to acetylCoA carboxylase, a crucial enzyme for the production of ketone body (Xu et. al., 2021). MIG12’s defect causes ACC to be less active, which leads to decreased production. Lack of ketone body in the body can result in a host of metabolic problems such as seizures and hypoglycemia (Liu. et. al., 2016). Xu et. al., 2021, also found that ketone body deficiency can cause a decline in energy production. This could lead to poor concentration and fatigue.
