The Fruit Spirit and Altruism: Prejudice or altruism

Altruism is selfless, caring behavior motivated by the need to help others. Studies have shown that people who are altruistic tend to be more compassionate, which helps them better respond to others’ needs (Batson and al., 2019, Batson). Prejudice, on the other hand, refers to negative beliefs and attitudes towards people who are members of a specific group, like race, ethnicity, or gender. The negative effects of prejudice can cause discrimination, which can be detrimental to both the person being targeted and the society in general (Dovidio 2021). In their behavior and attitudes towards other people, a person who demonstrates the fruit of God’s Spirit will be different from one who doesn’t. Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of Spirit as love, joy and peace. People who display these characteristics are likely to be more charitable and less predisposed towards other people.
